Well, it’s that time of year again!!! Commercialism, red jumpers, turkey, crazy family feuds, presents, Santa Claus, snow, wine, pudding, brussel sprouts, church, mistletoe, carols, the film, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life(1946), the song, ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’, etc etc. IT’S DEFINETELY CHRISTMAS! I enjoy this season every single year!
I haven’t put my decorations up yet, even though the shops, neighbours and shopping malls have. The weirdest decoration that i saw was a DIY Christmas tree in which someone literally used a ladder and then attached all sorts of decorations to it. They didn’t even paint the ladder green!
Question…..what happens if you eat Christmas decorations? You get tinsel-it is. Hahaha!
Germans were apparently the first to use decorations on their trees. In the 16th century, during the Renaissance, devout Lutheran Christians brought pyramids of wood into their homes, decorating them with evergreens and candles. German immigrants then brought the practice to America. The royal family in the UK celebrated the practice, and from then on local businesses started the commercialism, where the ornaments from Germany sold fast.
A few representations of the Christmas ornaments are as follows:-
The holly decoration represents, immortality, the crown of thorns and the shedding of Jesus’s blood.
The mistletoe decoration represents the symbol of love, that comes from God who is love.
The evergreen decoration symbolizes perseverance and resilience to adversity. Jesus reminds us to persevere to the very end!
Candles and lights represent Jesus Christ as the Light of the World. We too need to be light to others!
Bells were part of the attire of the Jewish priests, reminding us that Jesus is the High Spiritual Priest in which comes much joy.
The wreath has neither a beginning or end, symbolizing God Himself.
Angels symbolize the presence of God, so that we can obey and praise Him.
Matthew 2:1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea.
A Roman Christian historian dated Jesus’s conception March 25th, so adding 9 months for Jesus’s birth in December 25th. In 336AD the emperor Constantine choose the 25th for political purposes, so that the pagan established celebrations would be weakened. Some scholars speculate and believe that Jesus was born in the early spring, closer to Easter.
There is no date of Jesus either in the gospels or in historical references.
Well, they both come from extreme temperature climates with helpers. They both love the colour red. What is the flying reindeer all about? When did they grow wings? What is even the difference between an elf and a gnome?
I’ve not yet read the book by John Milton ‘PARADISE LOST’.
In the book, Satan rebels against God determining to corrupt all human beings for his evil purposes, having balance for both himself and his fallen Angel’s!
What an interesting book! There are many different perceptions of Satan…..he is a fallen-angel, he is strong, he has great abilities as a leader, he is the serpent of hell, he masquerades as a humble cherub, a bird, a toad and a snake. He believes that Earth is more beautiful than Heaven and lives there on the planet. He is so intelligent that he is blinded by God’s grace and cannot repent of his evil vanity proud past, and therefore is condemned eternally by God.
Most people have heard of the song, ‘On the 12th day of Christmas my true love sent to me’
In Christian theology, the 12 days begins on December 25th and runs through to January 6th, with the coming of the Magi, the 3 wise men.
The 12 days were really to help Christian’s who were being persecuted for their faith in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Two Turtle Doves – The Old and New Testaments
Three French Hens – Faith, Hope and Charity virtues
Four Calling Birds – The Four Gospels
Five Golden Rings – The ‘Pentateuch’, the first 5 books of the Old Testament(man’s fall from God’s grace)
Six Geese-a-Laying – 6 days of creation
Seven Swans-a-Swimming – The 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit
Eight Maids-a-Milking – The 8 beatitudes
Nine Ladies Dancing – The 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit
Ten Lords-a-Leaping – The 10 commandments
Eleven Pipers Piping – The 11 faithful apostles
Twelve Drummers Drumming – The 12 points of doctrine in the Apostles Creed
The partridge in the pear tree is Jesus Christ!
So Christmas is next week. Enjoy the celebrations with family and friends and try not to forget the true meaning of Christmas!
